UEAA NYC Dragon Boat Club
United East Athletics Association began competing in the 2000 Hong Kong Dragon Boat Competition with only an open team. The team has grown dramatically over the years and have elevated ourselves from a recreational team to a competitive crew rising up the ranks in the NYC dragon boat community. We accept members from a range of ages and ability hoping to cultivate passion and love for the sport and a desire to pushing oneself and your team to new limits. No experience necessary! All of our paddlers are home grown and we’re proud of that.
Our team philosophy is to motivate through enjoyment of the sport and the bonds we form with each other. We believe anyone can learn to paddle, but a desire to improve only comes with passion. We foster team and personal growth by encouraging teamwork and camaraderie through water practices, pool clinics focusing on form and team weekly workouts that are fun and challenging! Our practices focus on improvement through correct application of the team’s official technique which emphasizes efficiency and endurance. We don’t leave teammates behind and strive to make each season better than the last! Looking for ordinary folks who want to do something extraordinary together!

This week meet Donna! Here’s Donna getting dunked after we took 200m silver and 500m bronze in our division of the Montreal Dragon Boat Festival in 2012! Donna joined our dragon boat club in 2009 and have been a part of our family for 7 years! Holy cow! She’s stuck with us through the downs, ups and in betweens and have seen us grow beyond even our own expectations. This is what Donna has to say about her time with the team! – “I’ve always had a thing for water sports, and I’ve always looked for ways in which I can foster connection with my Chinese roots. So when I learned that the UE DB team was recruiting in 2009, I made the jump and joined the team. Not only was I able to satisfy my hunger for water sports and cultural sense of self, but I was also able to find an amazing group of friends who shared similar passions and values as I do. As a team, we preach acceptance, teamwork, and self-determination. This team culture is what keeps me coming back every year. We have grown stronger each year than we were from the previous, and I have no doubt that we will only become better in the future. #AllTheWayUp #UEDB4Life” Looking for a few good souls to paddle with in 2017! Just holler at [email protected] for more info!
What is Dragon Boating?
“For those unfamiliar with the sport, dragon boating simply put, is a boat of 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steersperson paddling to cross the finish faster than their competition. It’s a team sport in its purest form that encompasses the elements of power, speed, synchronization and endurance.
With its beginnings in Southern China, dragon boating today is the fastest growing international team water sport. Each year, race festivals are held around the world in Asia, Australia, Canada, Europe and the United States, one of the largest festivals in the North America is held right here in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The appeal to dragon boating is mainly contributed to the sport’s ability to accommodate a wide spectrum of skill levels ranging from novice to competitive. At the novice and recreational level, teams often form as a means of social outlet, team building and an alternative means of exercise.”
