Message from the Chairman

January 26, 2020 by webadmin

As many of you know by now, tragedy struck 70 Mulberry Street, the building that houses United East Athletics Association (UEAA), on Thursday evening, January 23rd. A fire started on the 4th floor of the building around 8:45 pm. The fire eventually was considered a 5-alarm fire and firefighters were putting out hotspots on the roof until Friday evening, nearly 24 hours after the fire started. We are grateful that there were no causalities during this tragedy.

UEAA, Museum of Chinese Americans, CMP, CPC Senior Center, and Chen Dance Center are housed in 70 Mulberry and all five non-profit organizations have suffered great losses. The City of New York and community leaders are working on helping all organizations find temporary space and facilities to continue on our activities. However, from the obvious damage to the building, it will be a long road to full recovery.

Many friends have offered their support or inquire about how they can support UEAA. For now, please consider a donation at www.ueaa.org/donate. Other options for donating will appear shortly. Also, consider donating to our affected friends in the building.

Even though UEAA is recovering from this tragedy, we still are moving forward with our activities with the help of friends, family, and supporters. For example, with the support of our wonderful friends at Young Lions and Brooklyn Lion Club, UEAA’s Lion Dance team participated in festivities in Chinatown on the First Day of the Lunar Year. UEAA continues to plan to participate in activities throughout the Lunar New Year celebrations. Our community activities not based at 70 Mulberry Street are also still taking place.

The activities of United East Athletics Association continues on and we will serve our community during the recovery.

Chung Hing Sin
Chairman of UEAA
